How to Make April 15 Less Taxing

If you think taxes present a chore for you, consider the challenge facing tax-related software developers.

The total number of tax forms now exceeds 529. Federal and state tax codes, regulations, and IRS rulings currently weigh in with over 60,000 pages of fine-print documentation, according to the CATO Institute, Washington, DC.

Little wonder that 62% of US taxpayers turn to professionals for their annual chore, or that H&R Block’s tax-prep revenues stand at $1.9 billion, up from $700 million in 1996.

Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or a professional, there’s a new arsenal of tools at your disposal to help you crunch more numbers and crumple less paper in frustration.

H&R Block offers four major options, three of them geared toward meeting the April 15 filing deadline. You can find one of their offices for traditional professional help, choose online tax preparation (fees range from $34.95 to $99.95), or buy their TaxCut software ($14.95 to $39.95).

Intuit Inc., makers of Quiken and TurboTax, offers software geared for tax preparation in the $9.95 to $59.95 range. These products, aimed at returns of varying complexity, incorporate a user-friendly interview format to mimic the kinds of personalized questions an accountant might ask you from the other side of the desk.

It all adds up to an easier way to meet the April 15 deadline. And if all else fails, H&R Block’s fourth option is geared for the ultimate procrastinator: how to extend your filing deadline to August 15.
