If you’re a professional, you’ll find top-end packages a wise investment in your career. Otherwise, check out the other options listed below.

  PHOTO EDITING TECHNIQUES:

Auto Levels Controls. Use this as your first and easiest step to see if your shots can be improved.

Brightness/Contrast Settings. Helps rescue details hidden in underexposed shots.

Cropping. Useful for getting rid of unwanted details, such as that beachfront trash, or that ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend.

Cut and Paste. Still have the ex’s hand on your shoulder? Get rid of it by experimenting with the selection tool. Select and delete the hand, and fill up the white hole with copied samples of suit, dress, and wallpaper.

Layers. Kind of like multiple track recording in a sound studio. You can add or delete text and images, superimposing graphics or logos on your photographs. If you don’t like the effect, you can get rid of the layer without wrecking the original photo.

Sharpen Up. Getting ready to sell that exquisitely detailed cuckoo clock on Ebay? Try using the sharpen tool so Web users can have a better idea what they’re bidding for.

Remove red eye. Most photo-editing software includes a tool to remove this common effect. Don’t use it on Nessie, though—she really does have red eyes.
